Richard Ferdinand Kunze

Our Perch Base Commander Richard Kunze departed on Eternal Patrol on August 14, 2017.
Richard was a Holland Club (50+ years submarine qualified) and a Life Member. In addition to
his role as Perch Base Commander, he previously served as the Base Vice Commander and
Chief Of The Boat (COB.)
Richard joined the Navy in 1960, qualified in 1961 on the USS Aspro (SS-309) and also served
on the USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624,) the USS Finback (SSN-670) and the USS Birmingham (SSN-695)
prior to his retirement from the Navy in 1980 as a Senior Chief Electricians Mate, EMCS(ss).
Richard is survived by his sister, Margaret Kunze, of Los Angeles, CA.

Perch Base SubVets conducted a memorial service on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 10:00 AM hosted at the
Surprise/Sun City Salvation Army. The Salvation Army also hosted coffee and pastries prior to the service
and lunch following the service. Perch Base SubVets are grateful to the Salvation Army for their generosity.
An inurnment ceremony will be conducted September 27, 2017, 10:00 AM, with full Navy honors at the
National Cemetery of Arizona.

Prior to the Memorial Service and during the luncheon after the Memorial Service, a slideshow presentation of

An inurnment service for Richard Kunze was held at the National Cemetery of Arizona on September 27, 2017.
The service included full Navy honors. Richard's ashes have been placed in the columnbarium at niche 47-C25.
Following the service, some of the attendees got together for lunch at Mimi's Restaurant at Desert Ridge.
