OBITUARY
Michael Mattera

Gudgeon (Prescott, AZ) Base member Michael Phil Mattera, 86, of Moorpark, CA (formally of Prescott, AZ and Hunter, NY) passed away on June 15, 2016. He is survived by his wife Inez, two sons Anthony and Joseph, and four grandchildren. A gentle soul dedicated to public service and devotion to family, he was born to the late Evelyn and John Mattera on August 2, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated in 1947 from Windham High School and enlisted in the US Navy as a submarine sonarman serving on the USS Bergall, SS-320, from 1947 to 1951, and the USS Sablefish, SS-303, in 1951.

Continuing the call of duty, Mike became a NY State Trooper and served the public from 1952-1972. It is during this time that he met and married his wife of 57 years, the former Inez Querin of Hunter, NY. A successful business career followed as owner of the Forester Motor Lodge in Hunter, NY from 1968- 1979. During that time he also served as a Greene County legislator and High School Board member. Retirement led the family out west to Prescott, AZ where he indulged his passion for golf, reading and antique furniture refinishing from 1981-2015. He moved to California last fall to be closer to family. A role model too many generations his positive quiet calmness will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Services were held at Mission Santa Maria 12028 E. Turquoise Cir, Dewey, AZ. On Thursday June 23, 2016 viewing was from 10:00-10:30, with Mass at 10:30, burial followed at AZ Pioneer Home Cemetery in Prescott.
