OBITUARY
Herbert J. Coulter, Jr.

Born December 31, 1938, passed away, surrounded by his family, at St. Joseph's Hospital July 31, 2015 due to complications following lung cancer surgery. Herb was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Herbert J. Coulter Sr. and Rose Coulter. He was the second of four children. Rose Marie Strine, Nancy Wolf and Michael "Mickey" Coulter. Herb enlisted in the navy and proudly served his country for 20 years as a nuclear submariner retiring in 1975 as Master Chief, the highest rank possible for an enlisted sailor. He finished his professional career working in the nuclear industry at the Hanford Nuclear site in Richland, Washington, Palo Verde Nuclear site in Phoenix, Arizona as well as numerous consulting projects throughout the United States. Herb was a Life Member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Arizona Perch Base. Herb enjoyed many pleasures during his life. They included vacation travel, camping, fishing, crabbing and clam digging, four wheeling, boating, model building, woodworking, working with gems and stones, jewelry making, mechanic work, and of course countless fix-it projects both at home and for many a family and friend. Herb also loved to visit with family and friends. Although he was a man of few words he was a master at telling stories of his life experiences with the ability to grab your attention to educate and entertain. Herb is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna, children Herbert III (Michell), Pamela Hartley (Paul) and Robert. Grandchildren, Kristin (Jared) and Travis Coulter, Cassandra Coulter, Connor and Kaitlin Hartley and great granddaughter Logan Coulter-Skeels. Sisters Rose Marie Strine (Ron), Nancy Wolf (Jerry), and brother Michael Coulter and many nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his father Herbert Sr and Mother Rose Coulter and brother in-law Jerry Wolf. A Memorial Service is planned for 10:00AM August 28, 2015 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024. Memorial contributions may be made in Herb's honor to the Wounded Warriors Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org. Heritage Funeral Chapel, Peoria.

Herb Coulter enlisted in the Navy in 1956 and retired from active duty in 1975 as a Master Chief Machinist Mate, MMCM(SS). Herb qualified in submarines in 1958 on the USS Wahoo (SS-565). He also served on the USS Pollack (SSN-603), the USS Ulysses S Grant (SSBN-631), and the USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623).

He joined our Perch Base USSVI on June 23, 2011, became a Life Member on November 6, 2012, and was inducted into the Holland Club due to being submarine qualified over 50 years. Herb served the Perch Base as the Storekeeper and the Treasurer.
